OK.

two huge movies came out yesterday-- Memoirs of a Geisha and Brokeback Mountain. Memoirs is a powerful film about the life and struggles of a girl sold into geisha slavery at a young age, and her abuse and life within the system, her escape, etc. A moving tribute to a very interesting time in Japanese history. Brokeback is the most daring love story of the year; big names Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger portray two cowboys in the 1960s who fall in love while on the range. It details their emotional struggles to deal with society its view of homosexuality, and is fill of heartache, joy, and is a monumental testatement to love and equality--sounds amazing. And its the first mainstream gay love story, and MAJOR props to big-time stars Jake and Heath for being willing to take such roles; definitely a step in the right direction for popular culture.

Both of these two powerful movies debuted yesterday. And no theatres in my zip code are screening them. What. the. hell...

damn newtown. damn them for ignoring quite possibly the two most important and influential films of 2005, too terrified of sales numbers to even acknowledge these movies. even the goddamned AMC24, which showed obscure powerful indieflick Hotel Rwanda, is not showing these two new films. they probably think these movies are too daring and demanding of societal response-- all good art is, after all

i'm hoping they're both limited release, and my local theatres start screening next weekend.
