I participated in the U Penn tournament yesterday. I was accidentally put in JV along with my other sophomore debate friend...after all the preparation for varsity, too. Oh well, practice for Yale or whatever, easy win. It was five rounds; I didn't break to the final rounds, but my friend did, which was ok, I didn't really mind. (I figured my affirmative case was too weird for them, which was ok...I prolly went 3-2).
Then just now my friend calls. He won....and I went 1-4. I only picked up one round. IN JV. Oh, life. I rationalize that I fared so poorly because of my "unconventional" case position, speaking style, and my lack of experience/commitment. I know I'll be getting it tomorrow at practice for failing miserably, even when I was put in the kiddie league...oh my god. I lost four of my five rounds. In JV.
But, yesterday was terribly fun regardless of my disgusting, disgusting failure. I met a bunch of cool debate people and we all went out into Philly hunting for food and found a 24-hr diner, and consequently ordered a bunch of appetizers instead of real dinners. Mozerella sticks, onion rings, nachos, cheese fries...you know, the good stuff.
And to think, Yale is next weekend. I hope that the judges will be more amicable toward my style of delivery, and also hopefully they will be seasoned and not be first-timers...because I know that my cases can win within a round where the judge knows what she or he is doing. However, that's not to say I don't need a lot of work myself. In fact, I've already started getting ready for Yale. How? Shopping, of course! Yah, clothes matter. Even if they don't, they do. Dig? Groovy.
