My DSL blew up on Wednesday, so I didn't have the chance to post sooner. Sowwy. Anywho...
George Bush won the U.S. executive branch election on Tuesday.
ugh. 1461 more days of regressive, dangerous, self-serving policy-making by those who we entrusted our future with.
At least this election, he actually won; the fact that he stole the 2000 elections definitely lent a lot of steam to the anti-Bush locomotive. I mean, last election, Al Gore won the popular vote by over 2,000,000 votes, and he lost the electoral votes of Florida because of the Choicepoint/Catherine Harris scandal, but this election, Bush actually won the popular vote. So I can't complain about him not being my president this term (as opposed to last term), because he is leading my country with properly-derived power (well, at least by modern American pseudo-democratic standards, but I digress...)
The biggest issue for me is fear of what he is going to do; apparently, 11 or so states banned gay marriage already, and the Constitutional Amendment is surely on its way (which by the way is a blatant mockery of the Constitution, as well as political precedent; Bush wants to write a definition of marriage into the Constitution, the same document that gives states the right to create the laws regarding marriage. Oh, the irony...) I can see it now: slashing Pell grants, blurring or even obliterating the line between church and state, privitizing fundamental social programs to further line the pockets of the haughty, overriding diplomacy in favor of "direct action," more pollution law relaxation (while doing so under Orwellian program names like Clear Skies Initiative), prohibiting women from excercising their reproductive rights, especially when their lives are at risk, and enacting other programs which are disturbing to all those with even a semi-functioning moral compass. The biggest problem I have with NeoConservatives (read: hicks with power) is their claim to moral superiority when they don't know the first thing about ethics! Anyone who says things like "It's a baby, not a choice. It's selfish to have an abortion when your life is at risk! It's innocent life!" or "Marriage is between a man and a woman. Homosexuality is downright unnatural!" doesn't understand what morality is; the fundamental basis of all moral values is respect.Imposing your belief system on others, and then writing it into LAW is the single-most horrific atrocity against morality one can commit. I wish all of those Georgian church-going "followers of God" would understand this.
On a related note, my mom told me to get rid of my "No W" sign in my window because "the election is over" and it is "immature" and said I should "be behind my president" and help work together with others to "make America better." Well, excuse me for actively participating in democracy; I now understand that expressing a dissenting view is extremely immature, especially when your leaders are all telling you to follow them without question; I should do something mature, like shutting up about what I believe in.
